Yesterday the United States of America dropped a nuclear bomb over Hiroshima, which is the first nuclear bomb ever to be dropped. An American bomber aircraft flew over the Japanese city, Hiroshima. This nuclear bomb was called «little boy» and was dropped from the plane at 08.15 am in the morning. A minute later an the bomb, with the estimated power equal to 20.000 tons of TNT, detonated in the centre of Hiroshima.
Hiroshima is a central and important city for the Japanese military, because it has big docks and a large number of military staff here. The war between the USA and Japan has been going on for a long time.Mr. Truman has said in for a long time now that if Japan do not surrender, the USA will do something they do not want to go through.
We have been able to speak with an American army officer who was a key person to the accomplishment of the mission of dropping «Little Boy» over Hiroshima.
Why did you choose to bomb Japan?
- There are several reasons why we bombed Japan. Firstly, during a long period with non-stop war against Japan, a lot of people have died, thousands from US Army and millions from Japan. Now we were up to a fight on an island called Okinawa. We assumed it would cost us up 500,000 soldiers. Then we decided it would be better to either avoid it by using a nuclear bomb. The army is more positive to this, about dropping one bomb, instead of too many deaths.
- Secondly, Hiroshima is a very important city for the Japanese leaders and forces. It is close to the sea, which means they are much affected by the boats to ship guns, soldiers, supplies etc. Also Japan is still willing to go to war but the USA wants to end the war. But Japan has their plan planned to keep on fighting till the end, so the dicison was not hard to take, says the American general.
What is the next thing the USA will do?
- Now that the bomb is dropped, we will see if Japan is going to surrender, because that would be mean that our mission is accomplished. But if they do not surrender, we will have to drop another nuclear bomb over a city. I can’t say which cities that are chosen as primary targets, but we do know which one to pick. Now they do know what this bomb is capable of, and it remains to be seen if they have learned their lesson or if they still want to fight until the last man is standing.
How much resources have you spent on this project, to be the first nation to have this nuclear bomb?
- We have spent around 2 billion $ to develop the nuclear bomb. It has been a tough time working on the project with a lot of negative and positive experiences, but we made it to the very end. At the end we had 200.000 people working to finish the nuclear bomb. But the main reason why we have spent so much resources is because this has been our main priority. And we succeeded.
Will you be using any of the science behind the nuclear bomb in future projects?
- In Over the next years we will be experimenting more with the science behind the “big boy”, to . We will make more nuclear bombs to and improve them and at the same time make them more effective. And we’ll continue experimenting to make this nuclear bombs with other types of atoms.
How do you think Japan will respond after bombing Hiroshima?
-To be honest I think they will react with sending more troops and make plans to revenge what they now have experienced. However, I really hope they will capitulate and raise the white flag so we can have peace, because I see no more reason to war. We will see in the next days what they plan to do, but I hope the plan goes the right way.
Thanks for the interview!
- Thanks yourself. You had some valid questions so I hope my answers will be sufficient. I hope we can end the Second World War as soon as possible. I also hope Japan now can raise the white flag so we can make peace and come to an agreement which both parts can accept, in order to avoid massive losses.

STRUCTURE AND CONTENT:
The text shows knowledge about the dropping of bombs in Hiroshima and can see why you have included the interviews. Still, the interviews seem a bit unlikely. What information would a newspaper reporter have the day after the bombing? And would one be most concerned with how the bomb was made, or why it was dropped and the possible aftermaths of it?
LANGUAGE:
The text shows average language skills. Still, work on expressing yourself accurately, choosing the right words and building good sentences, as well as idiomatically.
